PART 3
It had been two years since he let him go.
Two years since he walked out without looking back. Since he had placed the key in his hand and told him he was free to leave if he wanted to—knowing he would. Knowing he should.
Two years since he understood something he had refused to accept before: he couldn’t fix what he had done to him.
He couldn’t heal him.
Because his love for him was gone. Not faded. Not buried. Gone.
He had killed it himself, piece by piece, until there was nothing left to save.
He had tried for a year after that—tried in the only ways he knew how, clumsy and desperate and far too late. But nothing he did could touch the damage he had carved into him. Nothing could undo it.
And when it finally settled in, when he realized that loving him meant giving him something he had never given before—freedom—
He let him go.
It hadn’t been selfless. Not entirely.
It had been the only thing left he could offer that didn’t hurt him more.
So he stepped back.
And he watched.
Every day. Every night. From a distance that grew familiar, almost ritualistic. Not to control, not to interfere—but to make sure he was okay. To make sure he was building something without him. A life that didn’t revolve around fear, or pain, or his shadow looming over it.
He watched him start again.
Watched him work. Heal. Survive him.
And all of it happened without him in it.
