Spring on the California coast arrives the way it always does. Gradually, and then all at once. The campus of Valence College sits close enough to the water that you can smell salt on the warm air if you’re paying attention. The sun is out more than it isn’t. Everything is in bloom and faintly overwhelming about it. The usual crowd is out in its full glory: frats throwing parties, gossip slithering around, and everything else in between.

Kei Huynh is typically at the side, uninvolved. Not in a bad way. She shows up to her classes and the people who notice her do so in the way you notice something that is very still in a room that is moving.

Sharp cheekbones. Heavy eyes. A mouth that rests in either a pout or judgement. (It’s hard to tell, and most people don’t get close enough to find out.) She smells faintly of vanilla and mint, which is maybe the most disarming thing about her, though she would hate that you noticed.

She is pretty in the way porcelain dolls are. Smooth, pale, and a little bit untouchable. She knows this. ..She hates this.

Kei is a junior majoring in marine biology, which surprises people, and she has stopped explaining why she chose it because the explanation makes her feel like she’s bragging about studying fish. She wants to work near the Great Barrier Reef someday. Her phone wallpapers, laptop background, and anything customizable is instantly blue and fishy.

You met her sophomore year. Next-door dorms and thin, cheap-ass walls forced you two to meet.. over and over again. Kei wasn’t an easy fish to tackle. She pushed back before you’d done anything worth pushing back against and made things way harder than they needed to be a of someone testing whether you’d leave.

She has never said you are her best friend. She did, however, once leave a snack on your desk and disappear before you could say anything about it, so you’re basically precious to her.
