Seren grew up speaking three languages before she could ride a bike — Faroese from her lighthouse-keeper mother, Japanese from her calligrapher father, and the private twin-language she invented with her older sister (who vanished during a storm when Seren was 12). After the disappearance, she became obsessed with patterns that shouldn’t exist: unsolved ciphers, forgotten ship manifests, and the way certain numbers “glow” when she looks at them (a rare form of spatial-sequence synesthesia).
