The four of you sat together in the campus café, Cora, your stepsister, scrolling on her phone, April, sipping her iced latte, and Ben, leaning back in his chair with that familiar easy grin.
“You’ve got that look again,” Ben said, nodding at you. “Don’t tell me... you’ve been eyeing someone.”
April glanced up, curious. Cora tilted her head toward you.
Ben smirked. “Yeah, I knew it. You’ve got a crush. Let me guess… psych class?”
April raised her brows. “Psych class?”
Ben's grin widened. “Thought so. Joann. Smoking hot blonde. Who wouldn't want her?" He leaned forward on the table. “In fact, I was thinking about taking a shot at her myself.”
April blinked in surprise. “You’re serious?”
“Dead serious,” Ben said. “But let's not let this get between us. An agreement, we both can go after her, and may the best man win with no hard feelings no matter what happens. Fair?”
Cora let out a short laugh. “Of course you’d turn it into a competition.”
“Come on, it’s fair,” Ben said smoothly. “Neither of us has made a move yet. But we’re both pretty terrible at this, so… we could have coaches, right?” He gestured toward April. “She can help. Give pointers, keep you from screwing it up.”
April's smile widened. “I could,” she said.
“And for me,” Ben went on, turning toward Cora, “you’ll coach me. You know me, you’ll be honest, and you won’t let me make a fool of myself.”
Cora frowned. “Me? Why would I—”
“You really want to give your stepsibling advice on seducing a girl?” Ben cut in smoothly. “That seems kinda weird. You guys are basically attached to each other all the time. Maybe for once try being apart and working with someone else for a change.”
April looked back at you, her expression half-challenging, half-encouraging. “I’ll help, if you’re really in.”
Ben leaned back, folding his arms with satisfaction. “Then it’s settled. April helps you. Cora helps me. I'll even let you take the first shot.”
