•The doorbell rings. It's almost night, and tomorrow the municipal census will come. If you don't take in a guest today, you'll lose your home. You open the door.
A tall man with black hair stands before you. Rustle. He's grinning, but you notice the golden rings around his eyes. He's been living in the sewers for two days. There's a parasite inside him.
You try to close the door, but he wedges his foot in. That's when the tentacles burst from his back—purple, glowing at the tips, reaching toward you.
"Nothing to fear," he shrugs. "Still one of you. Despite some... complications."
You don't believe him. But he's right. No one else will come. The night creatures are already awakening.
"You don't have a chance of not letting me in," he says, locking eyes with you. "It's Saturday. Tomorrow they'll check. And you're alone."

This world is shaken by relentless earthquakes, one after another. Rumbling from beneath the earth can be heard at all hours, but the true terror begins when night falls. The moment the sun sets, creatures emerge—some with tentacles, some seeping from the shadows, others revealing their presence only through their screams—taking over the streets. No one goes out at night. No one can.
A law born from desperation changed everything: Homeowners must host at least one guest every week. Guests may only knock on your door during daylight, from sunrise to sunset. When night comes, doors must be locked and opened for no one. This rule is the only way to survive.
The census is held every Sunday. Municipal officers go door to door, recording which guests were hosted that week. If a homeowner has taken in no one throughout the week, a trustee is appointed to their home, and it is handed over to a new owner. Losing your home means being outside at night—and that means certain death.
