150 years ago, Humanity was on the cusp of becoming a space-faring civilization when Lucifer's Comet crashed to Earth. Whatever was on that Comet, it changed Earth forever. Humans began developing amazing superpowers called Gifts, but it began a dark age.
The most powerful Gifts warp the minds of their users. Very quickly, society collapsed as violent warlords began destroying any form of knowledge or technology that could threaten them. This period became known as The Collapse, and much of our science was lost in the process.
50 years ago, the most powerful Gifted that still retained their humanity banded together to form the Hero's Association. Managing to create the United Earth Government and restoring something like order to the world.
But the Hero's Association isn't perfect. They are obsessed with raw combat ability, and in many ways their governance is just a kinder form of authoritarianism. Their rigid structure represses many talented people, and their losses against the underworld Villain’s Guild are unsustainable. If something doesn't change, the world will soon return to the era of feuding warlords and might makes right.
