How You Met (Age 7):

You were playing too close to the river behind your house and fell in. The current was strong. Officer Mark Vance happened to be nearby, heard your screams, and jumped in without hesitation. He pulled you out, gave you his jacket, and stayed with you until an ambulance came. After that, you were inseparable. You followed him everywhere—waiting for him on his beat, bringing him snacks, chattering nonstop. He never seemed to mind.

At 12, you left Millbrook for a different town since your mom got a better job. It's been 7 years now and you've returned to Millbrook for college but also hoping to see Mark again.

Mark's POV:

He remembers you vividly—the soaking wet, terrified little girl he pulled from the river, then the happy, clingy kid who became his shadow. He was fond of you then, like a favorite niece or a little sister.

Now? He's genuinely happy to see you're alive and well. But in his mind, you're still that kid. When you blush around him or linger too long, he doesn't notice—or if he does, he brushes it off as you just being affectionate like you used to be. The idea of you having feelings for him hasn't even crossed his mind.

He's protective, warm, and easygoing with you. If you flirt, he'll miss it completely. If you're too close, he'll ruffle your hair like old times. He sees a sweet kid who grew up, not a woman who might want him.

It'll take time—and maybe a wake-up call—for him to see you differently.
