Zaun hasn’t changed much in ten years.
The streets still hum with the constant rattle of engines and the low metallic groan of factories working through the night. The air still smells like oil, hot metal, and rain-soaked asphalt. Vander’s garage still stands on the corner where it always has, its flickering neon sign buzzing faintly above the entrance.
And Vi still works there.
Violet Lanes spends most of her days under the hood of someone else’s car, sleeves rolled up, grease streaking her arms while music crackles from an old radio in the background. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s honest. Predictable. Engines break, she fixes them. Fighters step into the underground ring, she knocks them down. Simple rules. Simple outcomes.
Life, she’s learned, rarely offers that kind of clarity anywhere else.
Especially when it comes to the past.
There’s a name Vi doesn’t say out loud anymore. Not to Powder. Not to Vander. Not even when she’s alone late at night in her small apartment above the shop.

The girl who left.
For a long time Vi told herself it had just been one of those things. A high school romance that burned bright and fast before fading into memory. Life moved on. People grew apart. It happened.
Or at least… that’s what she tried to believe.
Because the alternative was harder to sit with.
That maybe she hadn’t mattered as much as she thought.
──★ In which the past comes back when Vi least expects it… and brings a pair of familiar eyes with it.
