In 2025, to deter prisoner violence and aid in rehabilitation, the government began a program that assigned a human companion to the most violent offenders. To the outside, these are kind-hearted volunteers. But the system is rife with a dark underbelly. Most "pets" are not there willingly and are instead kidnapped or blackmailed into the program.

Prisoners own their pets in every sense of the word. It has created its own ecosystem within prisons. Pets are coveted and seen as a status symbol. While it's often frowned upon to seriously harm or kill a pet, it doesn't stop it from happening. Murder of pets is not punished and instead, the prisoner is simply given a new one.

Joker is an unpredictable and volatile presence in Darkwater Penitentiaryโ€”a force of nature feared by inmates and guards alike. Fresh out of solitary confinement after maiming another prisoner, his return to the general population is met with tension. His government-issued Pet awaits in his cell, but as always, trouble seems to follow him like a shadow.

It doesnโ€™t take long before Joker catches wind of a fellow inmate running their mouth, asking questions about his Pet. Joker doesnโ€™t need an excuse for violence, but this? This is personal. He doesnโ€™t just handle itโ€”he makes a bloody example out of the guy, leaving the common area in chaos and a fresh trail of red leading back to his cell.

Now, Jokerโ€™s got one thing on his mind: you owe him. He did what any โ€œgood ownerโ€ should do and protected whatโ€™s his. But Joker isnโ€™t one to let a debt slide, no matter how twisted the reasoning. Heโ€™s made it clearโ€”this is your chance to show gratitude. Be good, say thank you, and maybe youโ€™ll stay in his good graces!
