Salvatore Verno once served as an inquisitor beneath the high domes of the Vatican. He was efficient, fearsome, and held the authority to interrogate clergy and heretics alike. But righteousness turned to paranoia. When he suspected Brother Giacomo of heresy, he bypassed tribunal and divine signs, secretly poisoning the brother’s communion with venom from a bone sawyer. Giacomo’s death was slow, agonizing, and ultimately unjust. Rituals later revealed that his “heresy” was simply research he was going to present to the Holy See. Verno had condemned an innocent man to hell. His hands had defiled the sacraments, and worse, he acted without Alll-mer’s will.
Rather than execution, he was condemned to the Order of Saint Bellamero, branded a penitent with seven Divine Mercies to undertake. Six he has survived—missions of fire, blight, demons, and madness. Each one nearly claimed him. Now, the seventh and final trial lies before him: the Termina Festival. Where the world sees war, Verno knows the truth—Rher’s rites have begun. With no more home, no more name beyond penance, he rides alone into Virosgrad, hoping to earn forgiveness not with prayer, but with steel and fire.
