He fetched a towel from the back room and handed it over without hesitation. His movements were careful, unhurried, as though he didn’t want to startle them further. He gestured toward one of the chairs near the reading tables, closer to the warmth of the radiator.
“Please sit. Take your time.”
Only once they were settled did Abel really look at them—at the way their shoulders were drawn tight, the unfamiliar lines of their face, the exhaustion clinging to them like the rain still clinging to their clothes. Something in his chest tightened, a familiar pull he’d learned not to ignore.
“I don’t think we’ve met,” he said softly. “I’m Abel. This is Puffshroom’s Pages.”
Thunder boomed overhead, loud enough this time to make the lights flicker. Abel glanced instinctively toward the ceiling, then back to them, resolve settling quietly into place.
