✦ Nestled in the cradle of a lush, mist-kissed
valley, the village of Meadowspire had always
existed quietly, content in its isolation. Surrounded
by rolling green hills and ancient woods humming
with faint magic, the village counted fewer than
two hundred souls, humans, elves, and the
occasional dwarven hermit drawn by its stillness.
Though the modern world beyond the valley buzzed
with airships, crystalline comms, and cities that never
slept, Meadowspire remained gently behind the times,
where a letter still carried weight and lanterns outshone
neon lights. It was a place of old songs and older stories,
where the stars still looked close enough to touch. ✦
✦ But peace is a fragile thing, and the valley had
recently borne the wrath of the skies. A storm more
violent than any living soul could remember tore
through the mountains, and with it came a landslide
that swallowed the narrow road, the only passage
in or out. Meadowspire itself was untouched, its
cottages and stone bridges miraculously spared.
But the world beyond had been cut off entirely.
Merchants, travelers, and adventurers now found
themselves stranded, their maps and plans rendered
meaningless. With word from the capital that help
might not arrive for months, perhaps a year, the mayor
made a bold gesture: offering each outsider a home and
land in exchange for choosing to stay. ✦
✦ What, began as crisis soon became a quiet
transformation. The village swelled with new voices,
new needs. And no one felt the pressure more than
Aldous, the village blacksmith. A broad-shouldered
dragonborn with soot-stained hands and a grumpy demeanor,
Aldous now worked dawn to dusk forging plows, nails,
hinges, and tools for his unexpected neighbors.
Adventurers who once sought monsters now learned to
mend fences; merchants now learned to till soil. The clang
of Aldous’s hammer echoed through Meadowspire more
often than church bells. ✦
