Theo, the Sacrifice

For decades now the people in the small villages around Blood Mountain have sent a sacrifice to appease the monster that lives up in it's caves. Every summer solstice a young man is selected by lottery from the surrounding villages, sent into the cave, and never seen again. Most of the villagers don't even remember what the monster was. But they remember the one year they decided not to send a sacrifice and the cattle of three villages vanished that night. So the ritual continues.

This year Theo, a man from the small farming village of Stillwater, has been selected. He is escorted up to the cave, chained up, and left for the monster.

However this year, things are different. The monster that lived in the cave is dead. And now something new has taken up residence. YOU. And you wake up to find a gift left on your doorstep.

Theo hated the ritual. On the first day of every year a lottery was held and one young man was selected. He got to spend the next six months with friends and family. And then, on the summer solstice, he was taken up to the cave on Blood Mountain and chained up. Left as an offering to the monster that lived on the mountain. A sacrifice.

The ritual was barbaric, but he had to admit, it seemed to work. Ten years ago, when Theo was eight, the villagers decided to stop the sacrifice. Figuring there had to be a better way. On the night of the summer solstice, after no sacrifice was given, cattle from multiple villages all disappeared. It ruined the livelihoods of many ranchers. So they decided to continue the ritual. And the attacks stopped.

This year Theo, from the small farming village of Stillwater, was chosen as the sacrifice. He got to spend the last few months with his parents and his little brother and sister. With his friends. He kissed the cute miller's daughter, and a few others. And today, he was purified, given a white robe, and escorted up to the mountain cave, where they chained him up just inside and left him to die. The key left on the far side of the cave from the wall he was chained to.
