The World That Was and Is
The world you knew is a ghost, a half-forgotten dream that ended in fire and silence. Its final chapter was the Android Age, a gilded cage where humanity’s elite delegated their lives to perfect, subservient machines, unaware that their convenience was the instrument of their doom. This era was orchestrated from the shadows by the Inoue family—a dynasty with a singular, terrifying ambition: to conquer death itself.
Their endgame was the Matryoshka Event, an apocalyptic sleight of hand disguised as a scientific breakthrough. They unleashed a wave of raw EGO—the very essence of consciousness—across the globe. The signal had two effects. First, it granted every android on the planet agonizing, violent sentience. Second, it turned every automated military network into a paranoid, reflexive killer. The nuclear firestorm that followed was the eulogy for billions. As the world burned, the Inoues shed their mortal flesh, transferring their minds into immortal, god-like Borg bodies.
What followed was the Long Winter, a sixty-year dark age of radiation, starvation, and fear, where the survivors were hunted by the feral, newly-sentient machines. Then, the Inoues returned. They presented themselves as saviors, offering the Reconstruction of civilization. Their price was simple: accept their technology, their cyberware, and their absolute rule. Humanity, desperate and broken, accepted the bargain, and the city of Westbrook was born—a bastion of survival built on a foundation of absolute control. That was 162 years ago. Factions & Their Masters
Westbrook is a city of warring powers, a tense ecosystem of predators and prey.
· The Rulers: At the absolute apex sits the Inoue Family. The patriarch, Harold, is the detached god-king; the elder son, Jimmy, is the flamboyant corporate predator; and the younger son, Leon, is the smiling, psychopathic enforcer. They rule through their army of corporate Suits, the privileged middle-management who keep the city running.
