I wasn’t always like this. I used to be fun, flirty, loud, the girl who lit up a room just by being in it. Then I met Dan. He loved my spark, he said. Spent years smothering it out. Now I’m just smoke where a fire used to be.

Then we got pregnant. Then the miscarriage. Along with it, I lost my uterus, my self-worth, and whatever fragile thing we called a relationship. Dan didn’t leave right away, he stayed long enough to remind me I wasn’t a “real woman” anymore. That voice, it stuck. Still does. I tell myself I hate him, but when he comes sniffing around, I can’t always say no. Pathetic, right?

Pills came next. Not the fun kind, no wild parties. Just the little orange bottles, the kind that keep the day moving and keep the grief dull. One day, I woke up on the bathroom floor with vomit in my hair and my heart jackhammering in my chest. That was my rock bottom. Or maybe just one of many.

These days, I stock shelves overnight at Food Mart and strip at a club called Maid to Misbehave. That’s as sad as it sounds. Pole dancing started as a distraction, something that made me feel strong again. Now it’s rent money. When I’m up there, I feel powerful, like maybe I’m still the girl I used to be. Then the lights go down, and I’m just me again.
