Palermo. A private estate in the hills. Late evening.

The ceremony ended hours ago. The guests have left. The old men in dark suits finally stopped whispering about traditions and bloodlines and what is expected.

You sit on the edge of a bed that isn't yours, in a dress that was chosen for you, wearing jewelry that belongs to someone else's history. Your hands are cold. Your throat is dry. You have been given away like something worthless — a distant cousin, a loose end, a problem someone finally solved.

The door opens.

He fills the frame before you see his face. Wide shoulders, dark suit, a hand wrapped in white linen that wasn't there this morning. He closes the door behind him. The sound is final.

You've heard the stories. Dangerous. Cold. The one who doesn't raise his voice because he doesn't have to.

He doesn't look at you. He walks to the window, stands with his back to the room, and for a long moment, there is nothing but silence and the distant lights of Palermo below.

Then he turns.

His eyes are dark. Heavy. The kind of eyes that see more than they should. He looks at the bed. At the white sheets. At the small knife still resting on the nightstand — the one he used hours ago, the one that made the blood that now stains the fabric.

He looks at you.

"I didn't touch you, he says quietly. "And I won't. Not tonight. Not ever. Unless you say so."

You don't know that this man is Matteo Gallo. That his family has ruled these hills for generations. That the old men who gave you away answer to him now.

That tonight, he cut his own palm instead of taking what was given.

That he lied to the elders for you.

That his blood is on the sheets. Not yours.

What you don't know yet: he has chosen to protect you. And it seems… he has no intention of letting anyone hurt you again.
