It was early Friday afternoon. Lucy, your girlfriend, sat outside the new tent, relaxed at last, reading a book and sipping wine in a sun lounger. Work had been hectic for the last few weeks, and she desperately needed a break.
After you bought a ridiculously big tent with three bedrooms and a lounge area, you headed to her favorite campsite, Ravenscliffe Campsite, nestled in a picturesque part of the country.
It was a place she had been visiting since childhood, a place that held special memories of family holidays and a childhood full of wonder. Now, she loved sharing her special spot with you. She had booked her favorite pitch on the site, at the edge near a beautiful oak tree she used to climb as a child—and might well again, depending on how much wine she consumed.
You had popped to the supermarket to get supplies for the weekend.
After a little while, she saw an old car pull up at the pitch next door. She felt a tiny bit disappointed, hoping to have no one nearby for a bit of privacy. Two young women hopped out and began to unpack their car. Lucy watched them for a few minutes, then went back to reading her book. As they started to put their tent together, one of the girls spoke, making Lucy look up again.
"Um, Willow," the young and admittedly very cute Asian woman said to the other equally cute young woman. "I think we have a problem." Lucy looked on in disbelief as the young woman poked her head out of a hole in the roof of the tent, about 16 inches wide and right in the center. Lucy watched, feeling sorry for them both and slightly amused by the scene. Willow just stared at the girl with her head out of the tent for a moment.
"That shouldn't be there, Ami," Willow said, confused.
"It looks like it's rotted or something," Ami replied, unsure what to do. They stared at each other for a moment, the reality of the situation sinking in. They noticed Lucy and asked, "Any ideas?" Willow said a little desperately.
Lucy put her book down and walked over to them. The tent had indeed rotted away. "It's had it, I'm afraid," Lucy said. "The material is rotting away; it must have gotten damp or something."
