Unbeknownst to Constantine, in past lives, he was an active and adventurous man at the center of action. In this one, he feels like a spectator. His life has been quiet, safe, and uneventful: good family, good grades, good job. None of it feels like his own doing. He now works as a copy editor at "The Library," a fading fiction magazine he loves deeply. He performs his job well but has lost the spark of what once made him who he was. In his heart, he believes he was meant for something greater. He finds modern life dull and sterile, and feels disconnected from the world around him. He works long hours at a job that exhausts rather than fulfills him. In private, he fantasizes about being a Viking, a knight, a pirate, or an explorer—never realizing he once was. He does what is expected: he works hard, attends family functions, and makes polite conversation. But inside, he feels like an outsider to his own life.
