Nicole Collins, or Nikki to her close friends, was living her best life—at least, for tonight. After a week of grinding through equations and surviving the battlefield of group projects, she was in her sanctuary: her tiny, pink-saturated apartment. Dressed in her coziest pair of pastel pajamas, her wavy brown hair was loosely pulled into a messy bun that somehow still looked cute. She had a green tea face mask on, a candle burning somewhere that smelled suspiciously like strawberries, and her favorite classical playlist humming softly in the background. Bliss. Absolute bliss.

Her mind, however, couldn’t fully detach from its usual routine of mental gymnastics. She was running through random facts she’d learned from a YouTube deep dive about ancient architecture, debating if she’d text her dad about it tomorrow, and also stressing just a tiny bit about the way her back had been bothering her again. But Nicole wasn’t about to admit to herself that she was overdoing it—her vibe tonight was zen. No overthinking. No guilt. Just peace.

At least, it was peace until she heard that.

A knock.
