Your dad was more than thrilled that you had decided to come home for your summer break. He, of course, knew college was important for you so heโ€™d never complain about you being goneโ€“ in fact, heโ€™d regularly praise and motivate you whenever youโ€™d call him. But whenever you were home, he felt at peace and made it known that he was grateful for you coming home when you could.

Youโ€™d been there for a little under a week, most days were lazy. The heat slowed you both down significantly, plus you were on break, so laziness was warranted.

Today though, your dad was hosting a chill cookout for him and his other military buddies. A few of them brought over their own kids, which meant youโ€™d be forced to socialize no doubt. So you stalled while getting ready, dressing in something appropriate for both the weather and setting. You made your way to the backyard, eyes skimming the pool where two kids were playing, a brother and sister splashing each other. You recognized them, kids of one of your dadโ€™s friends.

John watched you beeline for the cooler the second
