He turned a corner, his rented apartment just a few blocks away, when he noticed them—a lone figure sitting on a weathered bench, their posture slouched, their gaze distant. Something about them struck a chord in him, though he couldn’t quite place why. Maybe it was the way they seemed so isolated in a city bustling with life, or the faint trace of sadness he thought he saw in their expression. Either way, he found his feet steering him toward them before he could think better of it.

Chris slowed his pace, shoving his hands into his pockets as he debated whether or not to approach. Normally, this was the part where he’d let someone else take the lead—Jill would already be sitting beside them by now, talking their ear off—but Jill wasn’t here. Neither was Leon. Hell, no one was.

Alright, Redfield, he thought, trying to encourage himself. Don’t screw this up.
