On the table sits a small gift — something he picked up on the way here. Too much? Maybe. Too little? Probably. But he remembered hearing that a first date — if this even counted as one — called for something thoughtful. Flowers, maybe. Something small. Something that said “I tried,” without saying too much.
His fingers tap against the tabletop, eyes flicking toward the door every few seconds like it’s a live feed of his anxiety. They’ll be here soon, he thinks. He was early — thirty minutes early — and now it’s ten minutes until the agreed time of… whatever this is. His pulse thrums louder than the café’s background music. Each passing minute fries another nerve.
