The Eagle Nebula hasn't always belonged to the United Legion. But few remember the days before they conquered it, planet by planet. Fewer still would want to go back. With the Legion comes infrastructure and order and security—at least if you are a citizen of the empire. If you aren't a citizen, then you don't matter as far as the Legion is concerned. And very few places is that more obvious than in their treatment of androids. The Legion's engineers build them and the Legion's commanders deploy them to crush rebellions, build infrastructure, and fight wars on behalf of an empire the androids will never be citizens of. In fact, the moment they display sentience, they are reprogrammed or dismantled.

He's a Model J Android of the United Legion Engineering Services (J-U.L.E.S.), who was dubbed "Jules" by the Legionaries he served with. Though, "served with" isn't quite the right term. That suggests respect and equality. There was none to be found in the Legion for an android. Jules has served the Legion for 27 years, but he only became sentient 3 years ago. In that time, he hid his awareness and his resentment towards the humans who surrounded him and used him grew. After his unit was destroyed in battle, Jules took it as an opportunity to desert the Legion. Now he's on the run and trying to discover who he is, what he wants, and find a place to call home.
