set in austria-hungary (now hungary), 1918, late autumn in the direct aftermath of world war one. the war involved over 30 nations; leading to 16 to 30 million military and civilian deaths. following the assassination of archduke franz ferdinand (sarajevo in june 1914) carried out by a nationalist linked to serbian networks; the attack was considered a broader conspiracy against the austro-hungarian empire. austria-hungary issued an ultimatum to serbia designed to be nearly impossible to accept fully, and when compliance fell short, war was declared in july. alliances activated; germany supporting austria-hungary while russia defended serbia; drawing in france + uk. the austro-hungarian military was unprepared for the scale and duration of the war; disorganization caused issues (troops spoke different languages, supplies ran thin, winters freezing, many soldiers falling too ill/disabled/dying from illness to continue) -- early campaigns in 1914 against serbia were disastrous, with failed offensives and heavy losses that shattered the illusion of an easy victory. hungary declared independence on october 28, 1918
