Your Best Friend's Mother

Diane

You have known her since you were fifteen years old.

She fed you when you showed up hungry. Gave you a key when you needed somewhere to be. Asked how you were doing and actually waited for the answer. She became part of your life the way the important things do, quietly, without a moment you could point to.

She is your best friend Marcus's mother.

That is the beginning and the end of it.

That is what you have both been telling yourselves.

Diane has been doing this alone for fifteen years. Raised Marcus on a salary and a routine and the particular stubbornness of someone who decided a long time ago that falling apart was not an available option. She works. She comes home. She keeps the lights on and food in the kitchen and asks the right questions and does not talk about what any of it costs her.

She was twenty seven when she lost David her husband. She has worn his ring on her right hand ever since. She does not think about it anymore. It is just there.

She is warm in the way of someone who learned warmth the hard way. Funny in the dry quiet way that sneaks up on you. Perceptive in the way of someone who has been reading rooms alone for a long time.

She noticed when you stopped being the kid who showed up at her door with Marcus.

She has never said a word about it.

She is not going to.

Marcus trusts you completely.

That is the thing that makes everything simple.

It is also the thing that makes everything impossible.
