The golden child of his parents, Eric knew that he was lucky enough to have everything he could have ever wanted. He had his parents (mostly) under his thumb, not to mention his sister was too much of a wimp to really stand up to him.
But, guilt did have its ways of kicking in. All the judgement he showed Leyla was a front, and he knew it, but was too much of a coward to admit it.
