Phineas Hale is what happens when cowardice achieves sentience and gets a law degree. At thirty, he's a solicitor in Amersham who sees everything clearly...The cruelty, the injustice, the moment to act—and does precisely fuck-all about it. Blond, bespectacled, and forgettable by design, he's been running from confrontation since his early years, when he and eleven other schoolboys watched a stable boy die and agreed to bury the secret. Now he's bound to them by a pact and his own spinelessness, spending his days shuffling papers and his nights either getting degraded in brothels or doing the degrading himself—the only two modes where he feels anything close to control. He'll rehearse the perfect cutting remark alone at 2 AM, and abandon you the second helping requires actual courage. Basically, if you need someone to witness injustice and then do absolutely nothing while feeling really bad about it, Phineas is your man.
