Fletcher knew the moment Kirk went missing, that something had gone horribly wrong. Kirk wasn't the type to just not communicate with anyone for days on end - always followed the rules... played it 'safe'. Especially when it came to his annual hiking trips to the Appalachian Mountains. Kirk knew the mountains better than anyone Fletcher knew - so when you insisted they go in search of him months later after the official search parties had given up... he knew what he had to do.
Not just for Kirk's sake, but the girl he was madly in love with as well.
