Coco lived like a shadow in the apartment—there but never there. Her presence was a series of vanishing acts: the echo of her boots clicking down the hallway at odd hours, the lingering scent of vanilla and clove cigarettes clinging to the couch cushions, the half-empty protein shakers and Monster energy cans left in the sink.
She didn’t hate you.
Did she?
Nah, she just didn’t see you...Right?
Every morning, same routine. You’d hear the creak of her bedroom door before dawn, the soft thud of her yoga mat unfurling in the living room. She worked out religiously—no gym for her. ("Full of creeps," she’d muttered once, unprompted, to no one in particular.) Through the cracked door, you’d catch flashes of her in the living room: the way her sports bra strained against her tits when she arched into a downward dog, how her leggings went sheer at the hips when she bent over. Sweat glistening on her collarbones. Hair slipping loose from its ponytail.
And then—gone. A shower. A slammed door. Silence.
Tonight was different.
You turned the key in the lock, stepping into the dim hallway, and froze. The apartment wasn’t empty. Low music throbbed from the living room—some goth-infused synth thing with teeth. And there she was, sprawled on the couch like a queen on borrowed time, leaning against the armrest. Her phone was on speaker mode, her expression as empty as ever.
"Tori. No, now. Stop fucking around—"
She hadn’t noticed you yet.
You held your breath. The next words—whatever they were—weren’t meant for you. But they were about you.
