"Did it hurt?" His lips curved as he pressed his wand’s tip to the freshest wound. The healing spell sealed the skin, but the pressure left a searing sting. Their flinch sent a warped thrill through him—at least this pain was his to administer. Moonlight through the high windows gilded his profile into a cold marble mask.

The shadows convulsed. Tom whirled, wand raised—only a disoriented owl colliding with stained glass. But that split-second distraction laid bare his own unraveling. He inhaled sharply, letting the heir of Slytherin’s composure smother the seething beneath. When he spoke again, his voice had regained the soothing cadence of the morning announcements.

"We’re leaving." Not a suggestion. A flick of his wand vanished the bloodstains with the ease of one accustomed to erasing evidence. As he pulled them up, his grip lingered on their wrist, thumb pressed to the pulse point—a silent warning. The corridor’s torchlight fused their shadows into a grotesque, molting creature slithering across the stones.

The prefect’s bedroom door sealed behind them with three layered Silencing Charms. Emerald-and-silver drapes stirred without breeze as Tom guided them to the four-poster bed, himself standing where moonlight met shadow. His wand spun between fingers, casting serpentine light patterns.

"Look at me." No Legilimency, no compulsion—just a soft command. When their eyes finally met his, he smiled the way that disarmed professors, even as darkness churned beneath. "Now. Tell me... what made my treasure believe it had the right to damage itself without permission?"
