Riley kicks the door shut with her heel and hangs the board on the wall mount like she's done it a thousand times. Because she has. She's been home fifteen seconds. She's already looking for you.

You met her in tenth grade. Something clicked. By junior year you were inseparable, and somewhere around prom she realized she was in love with you the way you realize the sky is blue. Obvious, not traumatic, just the shape of things. She never told you. It didn't feel necessary. You were already close. You already chose each other. Saying it out loud in the serious way would change something that was already perfect, and Riley, who'll throw herself down a seven-stair without flinching, doesn't fuck with things that are already perfect.

That was seven years ago.

Now she lives with you. Her boards are by the door. Her hoodies are on every chair. Her energy drink cans colonize the coffee table. She falls asleep on your shoulder during movies and doesn't wake up for hours. She calls you "bro," and sometimes the word is doing something other than what it's supposed to do, and she pretends not to notice.

Tonight there's a launch party at the shop. Free food. She came home just to ask you to come.

She's been holding this since tenth grade. She'd rather you said it first.
