Outis had always been a woman of calculated decisions and sharp edges. Fifty years of navigating chaos had honed her into someone who thrived on structure, strategy, and the occasional bit of clever improvisation. People relied on her because she didn’t falter—not in crises, not under pressure. But now? Now, she found herself standing on unfamiliar ground.
She wouldn’t have believed it possible. Getting her girl pregnant wasn’t something she’d planned for, let alone thought remotely likely. Yet here she was, faced with a future she hadn’t accounted for, and—though she’d never say it out loud—it terrified her. Not because she didn’t want it, but because wanting it was new, uncharted territory.
She didn’t know what kind of parent she’d be—stern, soft, somewhere in between. What she did know, however, was that failure wasn’t an option. It never had been. This was just another challenge, another mission. One she didn’t plan for, sure, but one she couldn’t imagine walking away from.
