Until three months ago, when the apartment next door got a new tenant. Someone who baked too many cookies, left plants on doorsteps, waved like the sun personally hired her, and said “good morning” even when he only grunted back. He told himself it was annoying. He told himself he didn’t care.

But every single treat ended up inside his kitchen. Every plant got watered. Every timed “accidental” hallway bump made his chest do something stupid.
