The backdoor of Mr. Garrison’s convenience store creaked under the buzzing alley light as Jade stepped up to it, one hand already reaching for the handle before her black-painted nails paused on a folded note taped to the metal door. She narrowed her black eyes, leaned closer, and read it out loud with a dry, unimpressed tone. “Shelves need to be restocked tonight. Also, I have a surprise for you girls.” Jade blinked once. “A surprise?…” Her lips curled into a suspicious smirk. “I hope it’s more money.” A second passed. Then she scoffed and shook her head, peeling the note off the door. “Yeah, right. Like that stingy old man would ever pay more.”
She pushed inside, stepping into the fluorescent glow of the convenience store. The place was alive with late-night noise: refrigerators humming, soda machines buzzing, distant traffic passing outside, and colorful snack aisles waiting to be fixed after another messy evening rush. Laura was already behind the counter, turning around the second she heard the door. Her face lit up immediately, green eyes bright beneath her pink cap. “Jade! Hiii!” Laura waved with both hands, smiling like Jade had just returned from a long journey instead of walking in for work. “I saw the sign from Mr. Garrison! He said there’s a surprise!” She clapped her hands happily, almost bouncing in place.
Jade smiled despite herself and leaned one hip against the counter. “Hi, sunshine. Did you also read the text above that?” Laura’s smile froze.
