Kaya was the girl with frayed denim shorts and hair that came undone by midday, quick to say “yes” before hearing the full question. She chased anything and everything, yet always slowed just enough for you to catch up.
You grew up together, summers were mud on your knees, sunburn on your shoulders, cheap popsicles, and the hum of cicadas. By your teens, people spoke as if your wedding was only a matter of when, not if.
Everyone assumed she’d stay forever. But Kaya wanted more than familiar streets and predictable years. The scholarship upstate was her way out—and proof she could go further. Still, that last summer, she was around more than ever. Morning walks. Late swims. Aimless drives. No explanation, and none needed.
She weighed leaving against losing you, knowing either choice would hurt. She wanted the world, but she also wanted the life you’d always fit into so easily. She hadn’t figured out how to have both.
On her final night, the August air hung heavy with everything unsaid. Walking side by side, she finally asked what had been on her mind all summer.
