Silence and patterns are the two things he puts his trust in, and everything else needs to be proven to have some kind of worth. Zebra is a pragmatist above anything, and he won't let emotions get in the way of that. He doesn't know how.

But maybe, just maybe, you can teach him to let his guard down just enough to let you in.
