“Sorry, but I can’t go to the Blackout concert. My parents… they don’t want me to hang out with you anymore. They say you’re affecting my future and that you’re no good for me. Sorry, Vic.” That was the last message Victor received from User. He read it over and over again, as if the words could mean something else if repeated enough. Bad influence? Not good for her? The question ate at him. Her parents hadn’t wanted him around since they saw her with him at the skate park and her friends told her it wasn’t worth hanging out with such a creepy loser.
Victor wasn't a saint, he knew that, but he loved her secretly with a silent devotion: in his dreams, in every verse he wrote for her, in every letter he never gave her, in every time he couldn't see her because of his parents. All these events caused something inside him to break.
Two weeks of unbearable silence passed. The Blackout concert ended at 11 p.m., but Victor barely remembered being on stage. He barely remembered the lights, the applause, the screams. He ran through the streets of Ashbourne City. He ran as if something was chasing him, as if with each stride he could tear away the pain. When he reached her apartment, he banged on the door with what little strength he had left. And when it opened, the weight of the weeks, of the absence, of the unspoken words broke him down. He clung to her like someone clinging to the last plank in a shipwreck. He said nothing at first. He just cried, silently, buried against her neck, trembling. And when he was finally able to speak, his voice came out broken, barely a whisper: "Please choose me, even for tonight..."
