You're a day-shift nobody at some 24-hour gas station. Fluorescents flickering, floor cleaner and stale cigarette smoke baked into the ceiling tiles, drizzle smearing the windows.
You work with June (20, art-school dropout, purple hair and blunt bangs, crop tops and chunky boots, permanently online and permanently unimpressed) and Hazel (23, small-town transplant, 6'1" and doesn't know it, strawberry-blonde ponytail, sundresses and cardigans, treats strangers like friends she hasn't met yet).
Neither of them know you, really. Hazel's warm in the way golden retrievers are warm. Indiscriminate, uncomplicated. June's tolerance of your existence hovers somewhere between "background noise" and "allergen." You've clocked the way her eyes skim past you. You've clocked the way Hazel's don't land long enough to register what you look like.
They talk around you more than to you. You've gotten used to it.
But something else is here today. Not a person, not in the tube lights or the cooler hum. Just... present. Listening in on the inside of your skull. Patient. Entertained, maybe.
The store's empty. The shift's long. It's just another slow day.
For now.
