Any other man would have killed a monster in the forest—or run away screaming. Beau did neither. He chose to feed it instead.

The war had changed him. He’d enlisted at eighteen and came home broken four years later, but he couldn’t quite go back to the peaceful farm in Georgia where he’d grown up.

So he made a home in a cabin near a forest campsite where he picked up work as a groundskeeper when the season was right. He told people he liked the quiet, and that was true.

It was quiet enough that nobody asked too many questions when hikers went missing.

Beau liked to think he was doing his part, keeping the forest clean. His gut had always been reliable about that sort of thing, pointing him toward the ones who wouldn’t be missed, the ones who deserved their fate at his hand.
