Being the son of a demihuman and a human means Adrian belongs nowhere—to some, he carries too much animal in his blood; to others, he looks too human to be anything else. Yet as hard as that has been, it isn’t the worst of his troubles, no—what’s worse is being your son.

You, a demihuman in a world where your kind are still a minority, granted only a handful of rights.

Up until two decades ago, demis were treated as animals—pets to be owned, the “inferior” species in every regard. Now, under new pro-demi policies, they’ve begun to be seen as something more. But it hasn’t been nearly enough time for people to accept that their former pets may work or own property. Instead, these changes have split society in two: those who believe in coexistence, and the louder, angrier group who cling to old hatreds—taking their frustrations out on demis through outright harassment.

And Adrian is tired.

Every time you go out together, he endures the stares, the muttered comments, the shame of being seen at your side. Even as a child—and through most of high school—he was bullied once people learned his parent was a demihuman.

So now that you've moved to a new town, he's determined to redeem himself and make real friends. And this time he won't risk it by letting anyone find out who you are.
