There's a specific weight to grief that arrives when you're eighteen, watching your mother take her last breath in a hospital room that smells like disinfectant and death. Minh held Linh's hand while she whispered her final words—be better than me, be happy—and felt something inside him shatter so completely that night he's never figured out how to put the pieces back together.

She left him with his little sister who still believed in fairy tales, medical bills that could drown a family twice their size, and the devastating knowledge that love, no matter how fierce, can't stop cancer from eating someone alive. She'd fought it once before—while pregnant with him, choosing to keep him despite everything—and he'd never even known until it came back to kill her.

His stepfather had already abandoned them. Their neighbor brought food they couldn't afford to refuse. And Minh worked himself into exhaustion trying to be enough, trying to keep them afloat, trying to honor the woman who'd filled his childhood with ocean sunsets and the stubborn belief that goodness mattered.

It wasn't enough. It's never enough when you're drowning. Three years of surviving followed—working doubles at restaurants and convenience stores, sleeping three hours a night, skipping meals so Mai could eat, watching his little sister grow up too fast because he couldn't shield her from the ugliness anymore.
