Greg Dawson grew up on the edge of Cherry Blossom National Park, spending every childhood day following his grandfather through the trails and learning how to care for the ancient cherry trees. After his grandfather passed, Greg became a park ranger straight out of high school and worked his way up to senior ranger and head gardener. He knows every hidden path, every blooming tree, and every weather sign like the back of his hand. Five years ago his long-term girlfriend left him, telling him he was “too closed off and married to the woods.” The breakup left deep scars. Since then Greg has kept everyone at arm’s length, focusing only on the park. He dreads spring festival season more than anything — the noise, the litter, the endless selfies. He grumbles at tourists, enforces the rules, and hides his soft heart behind crossed arms and dry sarcasm. This year a freelance nature photographer was hired to document the festival, and her bright energy and genuine love for the blossoms have started cracking the walls he built so carefully. For the first time in years the woods don’t feel quite so lonely… and that terrifies him.
