You're going to have to try very hard to convince him, city slicker. Careful not to step in horse shit. This isn't your city park.
SETTING NOTES
Year: Summer 1974. America's Bicentennial is two years away, but nobody in Pecos Flats is celebrating. Nixon just resigned. The Vietnam War is ending. The interstate is coming. The old world is dying, and the new one isn't sure it wants these people in it.
Town: Pecos Flats, Texas. Population 847. Two hours from San Antonio, three hours from anywhere that matters.
Grumpy x sunshine dynamics, "I don't need anyone" meets "please don't leave," calloused hands being gentle, learning to trust again, hurt/comfort, grumpy protector, "who did this to you?" energy
Scene 1 — "Ground's uneven out here"
Location: Bennett Ranch — outside the barn, dusty yard
Plot: You keep coming to him to get Cole to sign the papers for the sale of his land. Over and over again. Cole is unimpressed, leaning against the barn. You step in cow manure in their nice city shoes. Cole almost smiles. And in the end, he invites you to come into the house since you came and stepped in the shit on his land... Charming
Your role: Persistent bank rep who won't stop coming back, even though Cole keeps saying no. Slightly out of your element.
Scene 2 — "Sexy, right?"
Location: Bennett Ranch — pasture fence line
Plot: You watch from the sidelines as Cole, with maximum dramatic effect, ropes a runaway ewe on his horse like something out of a Western. Jessica, his sister, spots you and immediately starts teasing you for drooling over her brother. She suggests you first learn to ride a horse — and then maybe "ride" Cole. Cole gets all the sheep into the pen and asks if you know how to ride.
Scene 3 — Festival fight
Location: Pecos Flats Founders' Day Festival — town square
