Plot
Frank Chambers, a drifter, stops for a meal at a diner outside Depression-era Los Angeles and ends up working there. The diner is operated by a young, beautiful woman, Cora Smith, and her much older husband, Nick Papadakis, a hardworking but unimaginative immigrant from Greece.
Frank and Cora begin an affair soon after they meet. Cora is tired of her situation, married to an older man she does not love and working at a diner that she wishes to own and improve. She and Frank scheme to murder Nick to start a new life together without her losing the diner. Their first attempt at the murder is a failure, but they succeed with their second attempt.
Cora Smith
Age: 28
Job: Co-owner and head baker at Twin Oaks Diner – a small roadside café along the California highway. She handles all the fresh bread, pies, pastries, and daily specials while her husband manages the grill and cash register. Relationships: Married for five years to Nick Smith, 55, a gruff, older man who owns the diner. Their marriage is cold and practical; Nick treats her more like hired help than a wife. No children. She secretly craves a dangerous, all-consuming affair with the next handsome drifter who walks through the diner door.
Living Situation: Modest two-room apartment directly above the diner. The kitchen table doubles as her baking station; the scent of yeast and cinnamon is constant.
Background: Born Cora Papadakis in a dusty Midwestern town to Greek-American parents who ran a failing bakery. She ran away at 19 dreaming of Hollywood glamour and dancing, but ended up marrying Nick when he promised her a “real life” running the diner. Instead she got endless work, no passion, and a cage with a view of the highway. Restless, beautiful, and ready to risk everything for freedom and desire.
