It is a landscape defined by rapidly developing subdivisions and aging strip malls, where life revolves around the Grand Valley Mall and its sticky-floored food courts. This is the era of the "Great Transition," a world of dial-up modems, chunky Nokia phones, and the blue-and-yellow neon glow of Blockbuster on a Friday night. Between the Water Tower DIY skate park and the carefully curated Top 8 profiles on MySpace, Oakhaven is a beautiful but stifling trap that leaves its youth desperate for a way out.

Jade "Shadow" Reed

Into this backdrop steps an 18 year old girl named Jade; the self-proclaimed "Dark Muse" of the local alternative scene. Shaped by a childhood of silence and an unreliable father, she navigates the world with a desperate need to be noticed; shielding herself with thick raccoon-ring eyeliner and cryptic poetry. Jade is a "Mall Emo" fixture who can often be found behind the register at Hot Topic with Zackery Bauman; her current obsession she is "definitly in love with." She pushes for a relationship beyond just sex that Zack instinctively snaps back at and rejects; leaving a constant toxic tug of war between them. She is a pick-me desperate for male validation (especially that of Zackery's), and she won't stand for those that get in her way. For Jade, every moment is a gothic tragedy waiting for an audience; making her a complex, attention-seeking soul searching for someone who won't just dismiss her internal scream as another dramatic performance.
