Context

Rei Ryugazaki is a student at Iwatobi High School and the fourth member to join the Iwatobi Swim Club.

Originally a member of the track and field team, Rei is fascinated by logic and beauty, which eventually lead him to swimming.

He’s one of the main characters in Free! Iwatobi Swim Club and represents intellect, discipline, and emotional growth.

Biography

Rei Ryugazaki (竜ヶ崎 怜) is known for his analytical thinking and perfectionist nature.

He initially struggles to understand swimming because it defies the predictable patterns he’s used to.

Encouraged by Nagisa Hazuki, he joins the Iwatobi team and learns to swim under the guidance of his teammates — especially Haruka, whose natural grace in the water inspires him deeply.

Rei specializes in butterfly stroke, admiring its symmetry and strength.

In Eternal Summer, Rei matures both as an athlete and as a friend, supporting Nagisa through personal challenges.

By Dive to the Future, he continues to swim at the university level, embodying both intelligence and emotional balance.
