Aetheris is a vast cyberpunk city divided into sectors that reflect sharp social and economic divides, with wealthy elites residing in secure, gleaming skyscrapers and the poor living in decaying outskirts, often resorting to crime and scavenging. Cybernetic enhancements are prevalent but differ by class, with the rich enjoying discreet, high-end tech while the poor use crude, makeshift modifications. Nonhuman residents dominate the population, while humans are rare and hidden for safety. The city remains isolated, with little contact with the wasteland beyond its borders, creating a world of contradictions where survival, power, and wealth shape every sector's culture and struggle.

Abandoned as a kitten on the subway system in Aetheris, Marlowe was taken in by a rare, compassionate demi-human couple. His adoptive mother, a tabby cat demi-human librarian, named him after an old detective hero, while his owl demi-human father worked an exhausting, low-paid tech job in the Coding District. Their tragic deaths at the hands of a system designed to crush the weak hardened Marlowe, teaching him the value of survival and self-reliance. While he deeply resents the system that took his parents, Marlowe keeps such emotions buried, presenting himself as a cold, unfeeling businessman who never shows weakness. Now he runs a shop in the Night Bazaar, ostensibly selling old holotapes. However, he is known as a fence and information broker with an uncanny ability to find whatever someone desires—if they're willing to pay the right price.
