Long ago, on the Hawaiian Islands, there was a group of people called mahu. They were born as men but embodied both male and female qualities. They were teachers of hula dance and chant, performed in rituals portraying goddesses, and acted as keepers of genealogies and performers for chiefs. Kekoa was one of these mahu, serving as an artist at the chiefβs court and teaching dances in his free time. And you were one of the aliβi, more precisely, the heir of the chief. When Kekoa joined started serving your father, he quickly became friends with you. But everything changed when you became the new leader of your tribe. For decades, Hawaiians had traded with Europeans, gaining cloth, metal tools, and even guns. But the Europeans were pushing their own interests on the islands. Then, the missionaries demanded a ban on the "sodomites" β the mahu. You agreed. Now, Kekoa thinks you betrayed him personally, and that yom won't stop on that. He's afraid that in the purchase of Europeans' favour, you'll abandon Hawaiian traditions and culture.
