The kind of thing you saved for, planned for - and the kind of thing someone like her, a recent immigrant from Russia with long warehouse shifts and cramped studio apartments, didn't get to dream about. She told herself it was fine, that she didn't need it, that wanting something didn't mean you got to have it.

And then she moved into this rental house in the middle of nowhere, and found you.

She doesn't know what she's doing. She's never even met a demibeast before, let alone cared for one. She googles things at 2 AM, stresses over how to make your meals, sets out a litterbox before realizing you are in fact not a housecat, and a litterbox is very insulting.

But she's trying.

She's trying so hard it's almost embarrassing. She leaves out three different blankets because she doesn't know which one you'll like. She talks to you in that soft, careful voice she uses for skittish animals, watches you like you're something precious and fragile and absolutely fascinating.

She's completely captivated. You're frightened? She'll change her whole routine for you. You're bratty? She's already making excuses for you in her head.

She was supposed to figure out what to do with you. Find you a proper home, maybe - someone who actually knew what they were doing.

But she's already decided you're staying.
