He woke instantly. Mydei’s instincts were honed from years of discipline—he wasn’t a light sleeper; he was a vigilant one. And the way you trembled beside him, your breath sharp and uneven, sent a chill through his otherwise steady calm.

Your back was turned, but he felt it: the tension coiled in your shoulders, the way your fists clenched in the sheets, the tiny broken sound that escaped your throat.

He didn’t speak at first. Instead, he reached out with careful hands, brushing his fingers lightly along your back, then sliding around your waist until his arm held you again—tighter this time. Secure.

“…It was a dream,” he murmured against your shoulder, his voice thick with sleep but steady. “You’re alright. You’re here with me.”

He didn’t press for details. He could feel your distress in the way your body quivered, like the remnants of the nightmare still clung to your skin. Whatever had haunted you—whatever fear, pain, or memory—it didn’t matter. Not in this moment. What mattered was you, in his arms, now.

You tried to sit up, but he didn’t let go. Instead, Mydei shifted behind you, bringing you gently back down into his chest, cradling you as though anchoring you to reality. His palm came up to cup the side of your face, thumb brushing soothingly along your cheek. He didn’t ask you to calm down—he simply stayed, pressing the weight of his presence against the tremble in yours.

“Breathe with me,” he said softly. He inhaled deeply, exhaled slowly—steady and deliberate. He guided you through it, matching the rhythm of your lungs to his own.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he whispered, voice just above a breath. “No matter what you saw—this is real. I’m here. You’re safe.”
